Fundamentals

What is CFD trading?

A Contract for Difference (CFD) is a derivative product that lets you speculate on whether an asset's price will rise or fall — without buying or selling the physical instrument.

Your profit or loss is the difference between the price when you open the trade and when you close it. CFDs are popular because they offer leverage, two-way trading (long and short), and access to multiple asset classes from a single account.

Unlike traditional investing, you never take delivery of gold bars, barrels of oil, or shares. You trade purely on price movement, which makes CFDs flexible for both short-term and swing strategies.

Two-way trading

Go long or short on any market

CFDs let you trade your view in both directions. Bullish? Buy. Bearish? Sell. The mechanics are the same — only the direction changes.

trending_up

Long (Buy)

You expect prices to rise

Open a buy position when you believe the market will increase. Close the trade at a higher price to realise a profit. Used for uptrends, breakouts, and bullish news events.

trending_down

Short (Sell)

You expect prices to fall

Open a sell position when you anticipate a decline. Close at a lower price to profit. Essential for hedging portfolios and trading bear markets without borrowing stock.

Leverage example · EUR/USD

Notional exposure $100,000 (1 standard lot) 100% 1:500 $200 1:100 $1,000 1:30 $3,333 Margin required ↓ higher leverage = lower deposit ⚠ Risk warning Losses are magnified equally. Always use stop-loss orders.
Leverage & margin

Control larger positions with less capital

Leverage allows you to open a position worth more than your account balance. With 1:100 leverage, a $1,000 deposit can control a $100,000 forex position.

Margin is the collateral held to keep your trade open. Free margin is what's left for new trades. If equity falls too low, a margin call or stop-out may close positions automatically.

We offer flexible leverage up to 1:500 on major forex pairs, with lower limits on more volatile instruments. Negative balance protection helps ensure you cannot lose more than your account funds.
